Vanderbilt computer scientists have developed the Community Oversight of Privacy and Security (CO-oPS) app to explore the role of community oversight in managing mobile privacy and security. The app was tested in a four-week field study with 22 communities, revealing that it increased individuals' and communities' capacity to manage mobile privacy and security. With the proliferation of smartphones and mobile apps, the researchers believe that apps facilitating community oversight are essential for communities to help each other safeguard personal information. This research is timely, given the increasing need for improved data security measures and heightened awareness of cyber threats. Data compromises have risen by 68 percent between 2020 and 2021, and identity theft affects one in 20 Americans annually. The CO-oPS app enables users to learn from trusted community members, empowering them to take control of their data privacy and ensure digital safety, thereby reducing the risk of cybercrime. The study's findings will be presented at the Symposium on Usable Privacy and Security, with funding support from the National Science Foundation.
